Aside from Nie’s mud tigers, popular subjects for mud dolls include children, scholars, and opera figures. Mud dolls are also used for the more somber acts of prayer and burial (Minick and Ping 20, 10; Xiaoxiang 50). The techniques used to produce mud dolls are passed down through the generations.
